Fashion industry has a dynamic character and because of that there is a sense of artificiality of its identity. Similarly this illusion is also reflected in the multiplicity of facet of someone’s life as reflected through the fashion. For instance there are different styles of fashion and this thesis strengthens the idea of illusion of an identity as the building has fractured in multiple pieces with different shadows and reflections.
This changeability of style are also represented in the building, changeability in terms of character, how you move through the building and changes in the lighting condition to reflect on the dynamic of fashion as it changes in the industry. In other words there is a sensibility of transformation. This changeability of style is the factor that creates various spaces in this project.
The history of the word vogue demonstrates how sense can change dramatically over time even while flowing, as it were, in the same channel. And in terms of voging and reflection as seen in the collage study of building, the pattern of the façade of the building is the reflection of the existing site condition. The overlap of the shadows and reflections give the illusion that the building is seated in several positions, more like a dance consisting of a series of stylized poses struck in imitation of fashion models.
The façade of the buildings are fractured in many pieces, like a series of choreography dances. This sensibility shows the sequence of self discovery and series of dances that have been created as the building transitions through different opacity of light, shadows and reflections. As the opacity and intensity of light changes, the shadows and reflections of inside and outside position vary independently and that’s why the two buildings are vouging with each other.
The organization of the building is composed of a rental and fashion school, open loft spaces with different degrees of transparency, translucency and opacity as you go around the building. They all vary and are used in different ways, and experienced in different spaces. You can see different range of colors that highlight the degrees of opacity and shadows in accordance with the fractured façade. The shadows and reflection of both exterior and interior are overplayed through the surface and mesh development which looks like a multiple body in one space created by manipulating the opacity of light.
There is an ever-changing interplay of the dance of light between the shadows and reflections of the exterior and interior spaces. For instance, as one transitions from exterior to interior one would see the interior space reflected on the façade and the shadows of the exterior world. And the reverse affect is observed from the exterior.
Shadows and reflectivity are seen differently through various spaces. Similarly the variation of degrees of transparency, translucency and opacity is presented in fashion. And this questions whether fashion is an accurate representation or whether it is masked by an artificial element. In other words, this is suggestive of a symbolic use of transparency, translucency and opacity as it relates to fashion and architecture. There is a tendency to define and create an architecture that is easy to mass produce and applied to various applications. However, in my opinion architecture needs to be flexible. And what I wanted to show with this thesis was that in architecture there is always the illusion of permanence and impermanence and this is evident from the proposed design.
